Is Your House Prepared For The Rainy Season?

Table of Contents

The weather in Panama is divided into two seasons: There is the dry season and the rainy season. The rainy season is from May to December, and with it problems can appear, such as floods and leaks in the house. Here are a few things you can do to prevent unpleasant situations:

1. Protect your outdoor furniture

Preventing rain from meeting your outdoor furniture will make them last longer. There is furniture that repel water, but that doesn’t mean you can just leave them outside under the rain for days, so make sure to cover them properly.

2. Inspect the roof

Make sure you inspect the roof before the rainy season starts, as it is the first thing that can cause problems. While inspecting the roof, look for loose shingles or any places that caved in. If you find any broken or missing shingles, replace it. Also, clean any garbage and debris you see on the roof to prevent clogging.

3. Clean the gutters

Cleaning the gutters is an important part of the preparation for the rainy season, since it drives water away from your home. Making sure the gutters are clean will allow for proper drainage, thus it will prevent problems such as erosion and mold due to water build up around the house.

4. Clear the house area

Walk around the house area and remove any debris and garbage you see, that might become an obstacle for water. Keeping the area around the house free of debris and garbage the place from becoming a breeding area for flies and mosquitoes.

5. The deck

Protecting the deck properly from the wind and rain will prevent damage to the structure. Clean the surface of the deck and apply a waterproof sealer. You can also place non-slip coatings to avoid accidents.

6. The basement

A basement can also be a problem in rainy weather. You need to keep water from going in as this can cause mold. Before the rainy season, check the windows of the basement to make sure they are properly sealed and inspect the area carefully to make sure there are no water leaks.
